Even though we're not considered reading specialists, language and reading difficulties go hand in hand for many children. Many children that qualify for speech and language therapy based on a language disorder also struggle with reading. There are many resources that you can incorporate into your therapy sessions that work on both. You will collaborate often with the reading or Title 1 specialists, along with all classroom teachers, and these are some resources you may be able to share or use for yourself.
1. Phonemic Awareness in Young Children
This is a great book that focuses on early reading acquisition and how individual sounds make up words and affect meaning. This would be really beneficial for not just SLP's but all pre-k through 1st grade teachers!
2. Ready-to-Use Reading Activities for the Elementary Classroom
The title of this book is obviously geared toward teachers, however this is also a great resource for SLPs! It's filled with monthly games and activities that focus on specific reading skills.
3. Fee, Fie, Phonemic Awareness
This is a great book that I came across and includes activities for pre-kindergarten children. It teaches them about phonemic awareness (the concept that words are made up of individual sounds) through different categories including identifying sounds, building rhyme awareness, building alliteration awareness, recognizing letters, and developing letter-sound awareness.
4. Usborne Phonics Readers
These books are so great! Each book not only works on phonics, but short vowel sounds and rhyming. You can also use certain books for articulation practice depending on what sounds you are working on. I actually ended up going into 4-K and kindergarten classrooms and reading them these books while working on a "sound for the week" as well as rhyming and story prediction. The teachers and kids loved it!
This is a great website that lets you read children's books online.
You do have to purchase these, however it's a great collection of printable games that works on all kinds of different reading and phonics skills.
